Even though the Delaware Handicap is
not a WAYI race for the Breeders' Cup, it has been a key race for the
Distaff for the past several years. Thus I had decided to hold off
the Distaff ranking until after the race. Now that it's past, here
are the ranks post DelCap.
Rank Horse's Name (Sire) Trainer Information 1 Close Hatches (First Defence) Mott Even though Princess of Sylmar lost, she was still flattered by Belle Gallantey who won the Delaware Handicap. Her former stablemate would have destroyed these horses. 2 Untapable (Tapit) Asmussen Both older and 3yo female divisions look to be weak this year. For years they where so strong, maybe the tide has turned back in the males favor. Still she still has a monster chance against males should her connections want to go there. 3 Beholder (Henny Hughes) Mandella Yeah Princess' race was that bad, that I'm willing to put the champ ahead of her (even though she is unlikely to run this summer). 4 Princess of Sylmar (Majestic Warrior) Pletcher That was a poor ride, not a good race overall by her. I'm not even sure what to think of her anymore, other than hopefully she rebounds in the Personal Ensign (should she go there). 5 Iotapa (Afleet Alex) Sadler Too bad she's a West Coast horse, as it would have been fun to see her on the track where her sire broke his maiden. The Hirsch likely her next start. 6 Flashy American (Flashy Bull) McPeek Gets the spot over Belle just for the fact she has more potential. Also the slow pace suited the winner more than Flashy. That being said, she still ran well enough to finish third in the race.
Removed: Molly Morgan (Ghostzapper)-
Can I have a re-do on that?
Others Considered: Grace
Hall (Empire Maker), Fiftyshadesofhay (Pulpit), Scherzinger (Tiz
Wonderful), Molly Morgan, Belle Gallantey (After Market)
The next Distaff list will be after the
Clement L. Hirsch
Stakes when like the Classic the list will be expanded from 6 to 9.
Also of note, this will be the only time that the Classic and Distaff
will be separated. From here on out, they will be in the same post.
