With the Gold Cup at Santa Anita in the
books, here is the new list for the Classic only. Once again these
are only the top 6 horses.
Rank Horse's Name (Sire) Trainer Information 1 Palace Malice (Curlin) Pletcher Nothing in the Gold Cup changed my opinion, he's still the top horse. 2 Tonalist (Tapit) Clement Jim Dandy bound, but could see a challenger in Untapable the KY Oaks winner whose trainer has won a Classic with #1's sire. Will be interesting if he can follow in Palace Malice's footsteps in being a solid second half 3 year old. 3 California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) Sherman Could be in the catbird's seat if the Cal horses keep beating up on each other the rest of the summer. It will also be interesting what race he comes back in. 4 Moonshine Mullin (Albert the Great) Morse Still not sure what race he's pointing to as his connections are going to be avoiding #1. Good news is that he's run well at Saratoga where he will be running. 5 Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song) Lukas Whatever race it is, he'll be there. Hopefully he doesn't run until Saratoga, but it would not be a major surprise if he goes in the Suburban. Thinking though that won't happen. 6 Majestic Harbor (Rockport Harbor) McCarthy Most will likely say that he is a plodder (which is somewhat true since he was the beneficiary of a hot pace in the Gold Cup), and some will also say he beat an over the hill Game On Dude. Still he won fair and square defeating Imperative, Clubhouse Ride, Dude. The NBCSN analysts where poo-poohing his win, but they might be wrong in this case as who knows if Mucho Macho Man will be healthy enough for his defense. Keep an eye on him.
Removed: Imperative (Bernardini)-
finished ahead of Game On Dude, but... was nowhere in the winners
league.
Others Considered: Wicked
Strong (Hard Spun), Medal Count (Dynaformer), Clubhouse Ride (Candy
Ride), Departing (War Front), Imperative, Mucho Macho Man (Macho Uno)
The next Classic list will be after the
Haskell (which also happens to be the lone 3yo only WAYI race). That
is also when the list will be expanded from 6 to 9 horses.
